  "Blank"Moss Mats
Moss Mats

Alternative Views:

Our patent-pending moss mat system is currently in development. We have many test plots ongoing, and are experiencing some very promising results, albeit somewhat inconsistently based upon moss type, location, and moisture levels.

We see our recycled polypropylene mats as being ideal for vertical outdoor applications when misters or fogging machines can be introduced, since in a vertical position the mats dry out rapidly and growth stops without frequent watering. We have a test on a concrete wall surface using a special water-based adhesive that is working perfectly.
Please call to discuss your project - we will only be offering small amounts of pre-grown mats for sale, as we want our clients to test each application and site with a smaller area prior to covering large wall spaces.

We have a small amount of pre-grown mats available for the late spring and summer of 2012.  These pre-grown mats are not available here on our website - only blank mats that can have moss affixed to them, fragments applied, or can be left for nature to do the job with spores are available.

You can order pre-ground moss from us for inoculating your mats.  "Blank" Moss Mats here on our website are 36" x 36" x 1/4" thick and are Black in color.  They are ideal for getting moss going in less shaded areas BUT regular misting with rainwater (see our rain barrels) or with water run through a reverse osmosis filter is strongly recommend if you will be watering regularly.   Or if  your location is heavily shaded, you can just wait for mother nature to provide the rain.

We strongly recommend first removing all grass, weeds, and debris, raking the soil bed smooth (to eliminate air pockets underneath), and then laying down a thick black plastic or weed barrier (tamping or rolling firmly into position) to keep weeds and grass from potentially growing up through the mats.  Preen can also be used on the mats to keep grass and weed seeds from germinating until the moss fills in.

The photos here show moss mats just 5 months after having been inoculated with shredded moss fragments applied at a coverage rate of around 50%.  The stepping stone path that receives a lot more sun was not inoculated with fragments - all the moss plants visible have grown from spores provided by mother nature in just 6 months time.In six more months this path area should be filling in rapidly with the mosses that are best suited to this site/micro-climate.   If you would like to speed up this process, order some of our sun-loving Moss Milkshake mix, spread over the mats, and keep things moist.    You can learn a lot more about growing moss on mats by ordering our friend Rick Smith's excellent guide book, New Moss Gardening
